Tips for Treating Athlete’s Foot Naturally

Athlete’s foot (also known as tinea pedis), is a fungal infection that affects the skin of your feet. It is one of the most common foot ailments. Although athlete’s foot is not serious in itself, it can be itchy, painful and quite bothersome.

Athlete’s foot is usually contracted through many ways:

  • Direct contact with someone infected with athlete’s foot.
  • Walking barefoot in warm and moist places.
  • Wearing sweaty shoes and socks.
  • Sharing things (like towels or socks) with an infected person.

Home remedies for athlete’s foot

Fortunately, athlete’s foot can respond well to most treatments, which include home remedies. These home remedies have proven themselves effective for killing fungus that causes athlete’s foot.

Mother Nature’s abundance has given us a variety of raw and organic treatments that we can take advantage of. The good thing about natural treatments is that we can get them without the need for prescription (but still, we should use them at our own risk) and we can find them straight from our kitchen or backyard garden.

1. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil or ti tree oil is an essential oil derived from leaves of the tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). Tea tree oil is known to have powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, that’s why it is commonly used to treat fungal infections such as athlete’s foot. Tea tree oil is also proven to be more effective in killing bacteria and fungi than any other known antibacterial and antifungal agent, according to several tests.

As a topical treatment, tea tree oil should require a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) as it is quite potent and it can be irritating if you apply it directly to your skin. To make a tea tree oil solution for athlete’s foot treatment, mix a carrier oil with tea tree oil for a concentration of between 25% to 50%. Have a small amount of the tea tree oil solution and apply it directly to the affected area. Do this three to four times a day.

2. Garlic

Garlic is known for its pungent smell especially when freshly cut open, and that odor may put some people off. However, other people do not mind garlic’s sharp smell; instead, they have become more appreciative of its healing powers.

Garlic is known to have powerful and effective anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and even anti-viral properties and it has a long history of medical use. A recent study has proven that garlic can kill a common fungus called Candida, which causes skin infections such as athlete’s foot and jock itch.

To use garlic for treating athlete’s foot, crush four or five cloves of garlic and apply it to an affected area. Do this two times a day.

3. Sea salt

There’s a reason why you should need some “vitamin sea.” You will be surprised to discover that sea salt is beneficial to your skin because it is known to have effective anti-fungal and restorative properties. There are sea salt baths available on the market and you can purchase them anywhere from grocery stores to pharmacies.

A warm foot bath is the easiest and most common way to treat athlete’s foot, and also the most effective. Dissolve 1 cup of sea salt into a tub of warm water, soak your feet into it warm foot bath and leave them there for about 20 minutes. When you’re done soaking, dry your feet completely.

4. Neem oil and neem extract

Neem oil and neem extract are derived from the neem tree (Azadirachta indica) which belongs to the mahogany family. Neem oil and neem extract are known to have strong anti-fungal properties and are commonly used topically on fungal skin infections like athlete’s foot.

Simply apply neem oil or neem extract directly to the affected area and massage it into the skin. Do this about three times a day.

5. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a very versatile natural oil – it can be used for cooking, baking, health, beauty as well as medicine. Did you know that coconut oil has powerful anti-fungal properties that can help fight off fungal infections (like athlete’s foot) as well as yeast infections in the mouth and vagina?

Raw virgin coconut oil in particular is considered the best type of coconut oil in treating skin fungal infections. Moisten a piece of cotton ball or cotton bud liberally with raw virgin coconut oil and apply it directly to infected area.
