There are a variety of causes why your feet seem to be chronically itching – and what to do about this condition.
You may have athlete’s foot
Athlete’s foot or tinea pedis is a common foot ailment. It is caused by a type of dermatophyte, a fungus that attacks the skin of your feet. This fungus loves to thrive in warm, moist and dark places. If left untreated, it can leave painful blisters and the fungus will also spread to nails and cause a fungal nail infection.
You may have contacted athlete’s foot by:
- walking barefoot in public places such as locker rooms, shower rooms or around swimming pools
- sharing certain items like socks, shoes or towels with an infected person
- wearing ill-fitting closed-toe shoes
- wearing damp shoes
- having sweaty feet
- having minor injuries on the foot and nails
So if you may have any of the following possible causes of athlete’s foot, then you should do the following to prevent this condition from progressing:
- keeping your feet dry
- avoiding walking barefoot
- drying your shoes out under the sun when not in use
- wearing well-fitting shoes with enough ventilation
- not sharing your shoes, socks and towels with an infected person
- changing your socks at least once a day
- alternating your shoes to allow proper drying
- wearing dry socks
- treating minor injuries on your foot and nails immediately and properl
If it’s confirmed indeed that you are having athlete’s foot that causes itching, you may need to try the following medications:
- Over-the-counter antifungal creams and sprays
- Prescription medications
- Home remedies – one of the popular home remedies for athlete’s foot is soaking your feet in a tub of water diluted with vinegar or sea salt. This will help in drying blisters.
- Alternative therapy – among the most common alternative treatments for athlete’s foot is the use of certain essential oils such as tea tree oil.
- If any of these aforementioned treatments do not work, you should see a podiatrist.
You may have dermatitis or eczema
Eczema is characterized by dry, itchy and inflamed skin. It can occur on any part of your body, including your cheeks, neck, arms, legs and feet. Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema which is characterized by red and itchy rashes.
Dyshidrotic eczema or dyshidrosis is another type of eczema characterized by itchy and painful blisters. It usually occurs on the hands and fingers or the soles of your feet. Both males and females can be affected by this condition. If you see such symptoms on your feet, you most likely have this type of eczema.
Try not to scratch the affected area – that is one of the best ways to prevent from making the condition a lot worse. Additionally, try your best to keep your feet from sweating a lot. Apply moisturizing creams or lotions, anti-allergy creams or topical steroids to relieve itching and rashes, or taking oral medications. Your dermatologist or podiatrist may prescribe other topical and/or oral medications.
You may have psoriasis
Psoriasis is an auto-immune disease characterized by rapid and abnormal life cycle of skin cells, causing over-abundant number of these cells that accumulate on the skin. It results to soreness, pain, redness and scaly texture on the skin. It can also affect your feet.
While there is no cure for psoriasis yet, there are several treatments that can help mitigate the symptoms. Topical creams and ointments, steroid creams, UV light treatments as well as auto-immune medications can help in alleviating such symptoms.
You may have an allergic reaction
Your itchy feet may be a symptom of an allergic reaction. It can be the result of an eczema or dermatitis. You may be allergic to pollen or to latex. Or you may have an allergic reaction to shoes made of leather or rubber, or products found in them such as glues. Or you may be allergic to metals found in your shoes or dyes found in your socks.
Taking antihistamines is the most common way of managing allergy symptoms. They come in topical and oral forms, and they may be bought as over-the-counter drugs or with a doctor’s prescription.
You may have diabetes
Sometimes, having foot ailments can be a symptom of an underlying condition, especially if they’re persistent. Diabetes (or diabetes mellitus) is a chronic, life-long condition caused by excess of sugar in the blood stream. It can result to serious (and even life-threatening) complications.
Apart from other complications like heart disease, diabetes can also damage the nerves. This is known as diabetic neuropathy, which is also one of the most common diabetes complications. It can cause numbness, tingling sensation or itchiness, particularly on the feet.
Diabetes also leads to poor blood circulation, which can cause itchiness on the feet. In addition, this disease can increase the risk of bacterial or fungal infections to the feet.
Avoiding strong substances, chemicals or perfumes which are possible irritants to the skin is a good way to prevent itchiness on your feet. Topical and oral medications, moisturizing creams and lotions provide soothing relief.
